Installing Pizzicato

Subjects covered:

Installing Pizzicato

The installation of Pizzicato consists of copying all necessary files onto the hard disk of your computer. This operation must be done before you can start using Pizzicato.

You need to follow the procedure explained in this lesson. If you cannot execute one or more steps, do not hesitate to contact our support department. Together, we will solve the problem.

The Pizzicato manual includes several lessons on computer basics. If computers are brand new to you, you can refer to these pages as a first approach. We also advise you to read the introduction manual of Windows or Macintosh. Also play the guided tour offered by Windows or Mac. It will teach you the essential data to handle your computer.

To install Pizzicato on Windows, execute the following steps (for Mac, see below):

  1. Click the Start button in the Windows toolbar
  2. Click Execute...
  3. Type D:setup using the keyboard (D is the letter corresponding to your CD drive) and click OK
  4. If you don't know the letter associated with your CD drive, click the Browse... button and double-click the Working station on the Desk. Then double-click the icon representing the CD drive and double-click the Setup file (or Setup.exe)

To install Pizzicato on Macintosh, do the following steps:

  1. Pizzicato works from the 7.0 up to the 10.1 system with the following restrictions.
  2. With the 7.0 system, the Microsoft Internet Explorer can't be installed. As this software is necessary to view the complete on-line manual, if you use an earlier version than the 7.1, it will be impossible for you to consult the online help. We thus advise you to update your system.
  3. Under system 10, Pizzicato is running in the Classic environment. Pizzicato is based on the OMS MIDI manager which unfortunately seems to be a problem for the Classic environment. For this reason, the MIDI and score listening functionalities are disabled when Pizzicato runs under Mac OS 10. Problems are due to the fact that the company which developed OMS was bought a few years ago by another company, which didn't update OMS for Mac OS after system 9.2, (system on which OMS does not create any problem). ARPEGE will try to solve the problem in a future release for Mac by using another MIDI manager. In the meantime, if you want to benefit as well as possible from the MIDI and score listening functions, we advise you to restart your Mac in system 9, which in any event is pre-installed on the OS X Macintosh. This is valid as well for the installation of Pizzicato than for the use of Pizzicato .Nevertheless, if MIDI and score listening functions do not interest you, you can work with system 10 and it will work correctly.
  1. Click "Continue".
  2. Click "Install".
  3. If you have an Opcode studio MIDI interface, click "Yes", if not (most probable) click "No".
  4. Click "Continue" and wait for the copy of all files.
  5. Click "Restart" and wait until your computer restarts.
  6. On the hard disk, open the folder named "Opcode", then the "OMS Applications" folder.
  7. Double-click the "OMS Setup" icon.
  8. If Appletalk is activated, a dialog box appears and asks you if you want to disable it. Click the button "Options…" and check the box "Always leave it one, without asking". Click "OK ".
  9. Click "OK" in the "Create a New Studio Setup" dialogue.
  10. If your Mac has one (or several) serial MIDI interface(s), check the port(s ) (Modem and/or Printer) used by your interface and ensure they are connected.
  11. Click the "Search" button.
  12. Click "OK".
  13. Click "OK".
  14. Click "Save".
  15. The window located in the top left corner of the screen contains your MIDI studio. If it contains the "QuickTime Music" icon, double-click it and activate it by checking the "ON" box, then click "OK".
  16. In the "File" menu, choose the "Quit" item and then click "Save".
  17. The procedure which has just been described applies to 99% of the cases. If you wish to understand the entirety of OMS - this is not necessary to use Pizzicato - the complete OMS documentation is in the sub-folder "OMS Tech Pub", in the "OMS Application" folder, itself located in the "Opcode" folder of your hard disk.

Starting Pizzicato

The launching of Pizzicato (or starting) is the operation which makes it possible for Pizzicato to take the control of the computer. From this moment, Pizzicato is active and you can use it as indicated in each lesson of this manual.

To start Pizzicato under Windows, click the Start button, click Programs then Pizzicato and again Pizzicato. The program starts. To start Pizzicato on Macintosh, open the folder entitled "Pizzicato 2 Folder" of your hard disk. Resize the window and double-click the "Pizzicato 2" icon.

The first time, on Mac or Windows, Pizzicato lets you choose the working version of Pizzicato and asks you to fill in your license and serial numbers. Let us see this in detail.

Registration of your license

With the first launching, the following dialog box appears:

If you bought Pizzicato, you only need to fill in the three text boxes, respectively with:

If you did not buy Pizzicato and got the program on a demo CD, on Internet or via a friend, you can use the first four options, which do not require a license number:

Click OK. If you do not have a license (demonstration or shareware), Pizzicato is launched. According to your country and the version you have, the following dialog box appears. If it does not appear, the installation is finished. Otherwise, do the following:

Pizzicato is protected by a personal code system. This personal code can be calculated by us only after the installation of Pizzicato on your computer. This is why you will not find this code on the original CD nor in the box of the software.

So that we can communicate it to you, please send us your license and identification numbers located on the top left corner of the previous dialog box. Of course use the numbers which appear on your Pizzicato screen, the numbers of the example above being fictitious.

!!! Warning, the identification number is a 12 digits number located in the preceding dialog box !!!

!!! It is not the same as the number located on the CD box (serial number) !!!

We already have your serial number.

Only the identification number will enable us to communicate your personal code to you.

You can use the software for 20 hours without the personal code. After that, it will run in Shareware mode (without license). To obtain your personal code, follow the instructions of this dialog box and you will receive it very soon.

As long as you do not introduce your personal code, this dialogue appears automatically with the launching of Pizzicato. When you receive your personal code, fill it into the text area of this dialog box and click OK. If the code is correct, this dialogue will not appear any more. Pizzicato is permanently installed on your computer.

Exit Pizzicato

To exit (quit) Pizzicato, you must click in the File menu located in the menu bar, and then on the Exit item. Pizzicato terminates. You can obtain the same result by holding down the ALT key and pressing the F4 key on PC or "Apple" + "Q" on Mac.

If computers are very new for you, we advise you to read the lessons regarding computers, which follow this lesson. They explain to you the basics of computers and the various graphic elements which you will meet in your work with Pizzicato. If you are accustomed to computers, go directly to the Pizzicato manual and/or to the music course. Have a nice time!
